Your Radiator Serves An Important Purpose

Without it, your car will eventually cease to work!

Your car engine has a lot of different moving parts. When you turn on your car and those parts begin to move, the friction they cause also produces a lot of heat in the engine block. However, if this heat production isn’t kept at bay, the engine block could overheat and cause a host of additional car problems – including engine failure. Here is where your radiator becomes of the utmost importance. Your car radiator has the job of pumping water and coolant throughout your engine, absorbing heat from the engine parts as they move. Without a properly functioning radiator, your car engine would overheat and stop working altogether.

How To Know When You Need Radiator Repair

There's always one or more key signs.

Now that you know why your car’s radiator is so important, you may be wondering if there’s any way to know when your radiator is malfunctioning. The answer to this question is “yes”. Here are some of the signs you may start noticing if your car’s radiator is in need of repair:

  • Coolant Levels: The coolant fluid in your car is designed to last for a very long time. In most cars that are well taken care of, you only have to worry about having the coolant fluid checked (and possibly changed) every two years or so. During this time period, your coolant level should pretty much stay the same. If it is declining, it’s probably because you have a small leak or something is causing the fluid’s evaporation.
  • Coolant Leak: This is one of the more obvious signs that you are need of radiator repair. Most coolant fluids are bright green. If you radiator has a leak in it, you may see a puddle of this liquid on the ground under your car.
  • Burned Spots: The coolant fluid that runs through your engine isn’t supposed to evaporate. However, if it leaks out of the radiator the engine heat may end up evaporating it, and this can cause burned spots on your radiator or engine. If left unchecked, these spots may begin to rust.
  • Smoking Car: This is a very serious sign of radiator trouble. Your car’s radiator is designed to keep the car from overheating, but that obviously isn’t working if your car’s engine is smoking. When this starts to happen, a visit to a reputable transmission shop is in order.
